Music festivals regularly have a festival app nowadays. Those apps have functionalities like social sharing, push messages and live updates during a festival. But what happens when you got challenged to create an app for a festival whose organization does not want visitors to be online on their phone a lot?
My case study is about the festival Wildeburg. This is a small multi-day festival in Kraggeburg that happens every year. I created an app for this festival which “Wildeburgers” can use before and during the festival in 2021.
To understand the problem, I have interviewed 5 visitors, the organisator and a DJ of the festival to create win-win-win solutions.
" It so annoying if I can't find my tent ”
Visitor
" I want visitors to be offline as much as possible.”
Organisator
100%
of the people who used an festival app before, used it for the timetable.
50%
of the people who used a festival app before, used it for the map.
Based on the user research, I created User Persona Daan.
1.
Daan needs less waiting-time in the queue of the entrance so he does not have to wait for hours.
2.
Daan needs an easy digital way to access the timetable during Wildeburg so he does not have to search for it online.
3.
Daan needs an easy way to find his tent back so he is not lost on the campsite of the festival.
This is the animation that I have made the app introduction screens. It changes when going to the next screen.
During this project I have learned to think outside the box when it came to the solution. I could not just another festival app, because the organisator did not want visitors to be online on their phone a lot. I also have learned to work with a lot of different bright colors for the UI.
What I could have done better is my time management when designing the menu. I made tons of different options as you can see below, but I kept changing it. I have learned to set a time frame for things, and if I struggle with one particular element, leave it for now and continu with something else.
